Book design for the biography of a medical legend.
Healing the Body. Touching the Heart is a biography of Dr. LM Sanghvi, written by his daughter, Dr. Nita Mukherjee. Dr. Mukherjee is a writer, editor and social historian. The biography focuses on the skills and ethics of being a leading medical practitioner. She charts the mentors and peers who groomed Dr. Sanghvi as well as his life partner and family that enabled him to live his values.
By printing the book in two colours, the design embodies the simple and profound life of Dr. LM Sanghvi. Each chapter opener had one lesson from Dr. Sanghvi’s life, printed the old-fashioned way, with a typewriter. We used numerous archival documents such as old medals, letters, postcards, vintage glass-edged certificates as design elements throughout the book.
“My interaction with Rachita, as a designer for both my books, on Leela Somani and Dr LM Sanghvi, was an enjoyable experience. I was impressed with her creative suggestions, of course. Even more striking was her total involvement with the projects and the ability to execute them within the tight deadlines. What was remarkable was her understanding and complete grasp of my approach, as a social historian, of using archival documents as design elements.”
